Russia has accused the United States of forsaking its role as a neutral mediator in the Ukraine war, blaming Washington for exerting increased pressure through sanctions. Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, speaking in Moscow, criticized the U.S. for abandoning its impartial stance in negotiations to end the conflict. This criticism comes after the G7, including President Donald Trump, decided to bolster measures targeting Russia’s economy, with a focus on its energy sector.
Since Trump returned to office in 2025, he has attempted to mediate talks between Moscow and Kyiv. However, these diplomatic efforts have hit a deadlock, mainly because Ukraine remains firm in rejecting Russian demands that involve territorial concessions, military restrictions, and limits on Western assistance. Lavrov’s remarks reflect Russia’s growing frustration with what it perceives as biased international mediation efforts.
Meanwhile, Russian President Vladimir Putin has expressed concerns over Europe’s military expansion, accusing European nations of preparing for conflict with Russia by increasing their defense budgets and rearmament initiatives. Putin reiterated Russia’s demand for Ukraine to withdraw from the eastern Donbas region and announced that Russian troops are nearing the capture of the strategic city of Kostiantynivka. He also accused Ukraine and its Western allies of supporting attacks aimed at destabilizing Russian infrastructure.
The conflict, which began with Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, has led to significant loss of life and the displacement of millions. As Putin’s forces continue their offensive, the situation remains dire, with little indication of a forthcoming peaceful resolution. Despite international efforts to broker a deal, the path to a negotiated settlement remains fraught with challenges.
