For the first time, Samsung Display is set to surpass LG Display in terms of revenue within the global mid-to-large OLED panel market in the third quarter. Together, these two South Korean companies are projected to dominate approximately 95% of the market for OLED panels used in laptops and monitors, leaving their Chinese competitors significantly trailing behind.
Samsung Display has recently started to ship advanced OLED panels for laptops, which boast enhanced brightness and durability. These panels are being adopted by major brands such as Lenovo, Asus, Dell, and MSI. In a bid to further strengthen its market position, Samsung is expanding its production capabilities with a new 8.6-generation manufacturing line. This expansion aims to lower production costs and increase the output of these advanced panels.
Despite significant investments by Chinese display manufacturers to catch up with their Korean counterparts, these companies continue to face challenges regarding production yield. According to industry analysts, although there have been notable improvements in China’s OLED technology, Korean manufacturers like Samsung and LG retain a competitive edge. This advantage is attributed to their superior quality, established customer trust, and expertise in large-panel production.
The ongoing rivalry between South Korean and Chinese display makers highlights the technological and production advances that companies are striving to achieve in the OLED market. While Chinese firms are making strides in terms of technology, the current landscape shows a clear lead by Korean manufacturers, particularly in the premium segment of OLED panels for larger devices.
