Amid escalating cross-border drone strikes from Ukraine, Russian President Vladimir Putin has pledged to bolster national security and safeguard the country’s borders. Addressing a United Russia party congress, Putin emphasized Russia’s awareness of prevailing threats and affirmed the nation’s commitment to ensuring the safety of its territory and citizens, despite ongoing attacks.
The Russian leader’s comments followed Ukrainian drone strikes that reportedly targeted infrastructure in southern Russia, including an oil refinery in the Krasnodar region, resulting in fires and damage. Ukrainian authorities have stated that these attacks are part of efforts to undermine Russia’s military capabilities. President Volodymyr Zelensky of Ukraine has noted that the strikes are specifically aimed at energy facilities contributing to Russia’s war operations, including those situated deep within Russian territory.
Over recent weeks, there has been a noticeable increase in drone assaults across the border, affecting various critical infrastructures such as oil refineries and logistical networks in both Russia and regions under Russian control. Additionally, officials in Crimea have reported disruptions including fuel shortages and power outages, further highlighting the intensifying conflict dynamics.
The ongoing war, which began with Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in 2022, has seen both sides targeting essential infrastructure as part of their broader military strategies. Kyiv has characterized its drone operations as retaliatory measures in response to Russian attacks on Ukrainian infrastructure, maintaining a focus on diminishing the adversary’s military support systems.
