Russian President Vladimir Putin has turned down a proposal from Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy for direct talks aimed at advancing peace negotiations, asserting that such discussions are currently pointless. During an address at the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum, Putin dismissed Zelenskyy’s suggestion for a meeting in neutral locations like Switzerland or Turkey. The Ukrainian leader had proposed initiating diplomatic talks from the current battle lines and advocated for a complete ceasefire during these discussions.
Putin reiterated that Russia’s objectives in Ukraine remain steadfast, emphasizing Russian control over the entire Luhansk region and significant parts of the Donetsk region. He also restated Moscow’s demand that Ukraine cede control over the Kherson and Zaporizhzhia regions. In contrast, Zelenskyy criticized the Kremlin for perpetuating the conflict instead of seeking a diplomatic resolution, arguing that Russia’s refusal to meet demonstrates a disinterest in ending the war.
Amidst these developments, Ukraine has escalated its offensive against Russian military and energy targets, conducting drone strikes on ports, cargo ships, and fuel depots. Russia has acknowledged these recent assaults and announced plans to bolster its air defense systems in response.
While addressing economic challenges, Putin defended Russia’s financial resilience against the backdrop of international sanctions and the ongoing conflict. He maintained that despite the economic pressures and restrictions imposed by Western nations, Russia’s economy remains robust.
