In an impressive market performance, SK Eternix, the renewable energy subsidiary of South Korea’s SK Group, has seen its shares skyrocket by over 114% in the past month. This surge is largely attributed to investor confidence that the burgeoning artificial intelligence (AI) infrastructure will significantly boost demand for renewable energy sources. By the close of trading on Friday, the company’s stock was valued at 80,900 won (approximately US$55.35), marking a notable 114.6% increase from a month prior. This rise comes in stark contrast to the broader market, where the benchmark Kospi index experienced a 20.9% decline, and SK hynix, SK Group’s key semiconductor arm, saw its shares dip by 31.2%.
The momentum for SK Eternix gained additional traction over the past week, with a remarkable 44.9% jump in the last five trading days alone. This bullish trend was fueled by institutional investors who purchased a net 106.8 billion won worth of stock, alongside foreign investors who acquired a net 79 billion won. Analysts credit the robust stock performance to growing expectations that AI data centers, which are heavy electricity consumers, will drive sustained demand for renewable energy. Adding to investor confidence is the South Korean government’s commitment to expanding its clean energy capacity, aligning with these market shifts.
In a move reflective of this commitment, the South Korean government announced in June that major industrial projects, including AI data centers and semiconductor manufacturing clusters, are expected to create an additional 39.7 gigawatts of electricity demand. The government also reaffirmed its ambitious target to expand the nation’s renewable energy capacity to 100 gigawatts by the year 2030. These developments underscore the strategic importance of renewable energy in supporting the country’s industrial and technological growth.
Investor enthusiasm is further bolstered by SK Eternix’s strategic plans, particularly its proposed 2 trillion won renewable energy joint venture with global private equity giant KKR. This partnership is anticipated to expedite SK Eternix’s growth trajectory within the clean energy sector. As the company positions itself at the nexus of renewable energy and technological advancement, its stock performance reflects a broader market optimism about the future of sustainable energy solutions.
