South Korea is planning an unprecedented budget that will surpass 800 trillion won by 2027, driven by an anticipated tax revenue of over 500 trillion won. This initiative is part of a broader strategy to ramp up investments in the artificial intelligence and semiconductor sectors. President Lee Jae Myung highlighted the government’s commitment to backing three significant national projects, focusing on semiconductors, AI data centers, and physical AI advancements.
A key component of this fiscal strategy includes the creation of a Future Response Fund. This fund will leverage additional tax income generated from the burgeoning AI-based semiconductor industry. It aims to finance long-term initiatives in areas like youth development, education, regional growth, and innovation. This move is expected to bolster the country’s competitive edge in these high-tech arenas while aligning with broader economic goals.
The government is also concentrating on enhancing the nation’s infrastructure to support balanced regional development. This includes upgrading essential sectors such as electricity, water supply, transportation, and logistics. Improvements in housing, healthcare, education, and cultural facilities are also on the agenda, reinforcing the administration’s focus on comprehensive regional growth.
In order to create more fiscal space for these strategic investments, officials have announced plans to restructure approximately 50 trillion won in government spending. This reallocation of resources reflects a commitment to economic growth and innovation, ensuring that funds are directed towards areas with the highest potential impact.
Beyond economic measures, the 2027 budget will also address social aspects by expanding support for the youth and enhancing protections for nontraditional workers. Additionally, the government’s “AI for All” program aims to make AI technologies more accessible nationwide, reflecting an inclusive approach to technological advancement and its benefits.
