South Korea has adjusted its economic growth projection for 2026 upward, increasing it from 2% to 3%, buoyed by a strong semiconductor market and solid export performance. The government anticipates a 40% rise in exports this year, with the current account surplus expected to hit an unprecedented $290 billion, primarily driven by surging chip exports.
To maintain sustained growth, the government has launched its “3-4-5 Vision.” This ambitious plan aims to elevate the country’s potential growth rate to 3%, position South Korea among the world’s top four exporters, and boost per capita gross national income to $50,000.
Central to this strategy is an investment of 800 trillion won into expanding semiconductor manufacturing, alongside significant spending on artificial intelligence infrastructure, advanced chip packaging, and industrial AI applications. The majority of the funding is anticipated to come from the private sector, with support from government-backed infrastructure, research, financing, and regulatory reforms.
Additionally, South Korea is focusing on attracting highly skilled foreign professionals, enhancing the resilience of supply chains, and establishing a Future Response Fund. This fund aims to invest in next-generation industries, education, and regional development, ensuring that the current semiconductor boom translates into long-term economic growth.
