Peter Cullen, the celebrated Canadian voice actor renowned for bringing to life Optimus Prime in the Transformers series and Eeyore in Winnie the Pooh, has passed away at 85. His family announced that Cullen died on Wednesday at his Los Angeles home, surrounded by loved ones.
Born in Montreal, Cullen embarked on his career in Canadian television and radio before cementing his status as a distinguished voice actor in the entertainment world. He first lent his voice to the iconic character of Optimus Prime in the 1984 Transformers animated TV series and continued to reprise the role in seven major films from 2007 to 2023, along with several spin-offs. His deep and resonant voice also became synonymous with Eeyore, the beloved, albeit gloomy donkey from the Winnie the Pooh franchise, a character he voiced across numerous shows, films, and video games.
In addition to his work as Optimus Prime and Eeyore, Cullen’s array of notable performances included voicing KARR, the villainous counterpart to KITT in the Knight Rider series. His vocal talents were further showcased in the 1987 action film Predator, where he created the iconic clicking sounds of the alien creature, and in the 1976 King Kong remake, where he provided the voice for the titular character.
Cullen often credited his older brother Larry, a former US Marine Corps captain, for influencing the portrayal of Optimus Prime’s noble character. Larry’s advice to embody strength without aggression helped Cullen shape the character’s heroic persona. This approach earned Cullen a Daytime Emmy nomination in 2011, and in recognition of his extensive career, he was honored with a lifetime achievement award at the Children’s & Family Emmy Awards in 2023.
Throughout his decades-spanning career, Cullen’s vocal performances became integral to some of the most beloved animated and science-fiction characters, securing his place as a lasting figure in popular culture. His contributions have left an indelible mark on the industry, and his legacy continues to resonate with audiences worldwide.
