India is advancing its plans to procure an additional five S-400 Triumf air defense systems from Russia, following Moscow’s submission of a cost proposal to initiate negotiations with New Delhi. The decision-making process involves the Cabinet Committee on Security, which will conclude after finalizing the price and obtaining clearance from the Finance Ministry. India initially signed a contract for five S-400 systems in 2018, valued at $5.43 billion, with the last of these systems slated for delivery by November 2026.
This potential acquisition aims to bolster India’s air defense framework, particularly in the eastern sector facing China. The S-400 systems proved instrumental in India’s defense operations during the May 2025 Operation Sindoor, which has reinforced the argument for further expanding India’s fleet of these systems.
While negotiations for additional S-400 systems progress, India has yet to make a decision regarding the purchase of Russia’s Su-57 fifth-generation fighter aircraft. The Indian Air Force has shown interest in the Russian offer, especially given China’s deployment of J-20 stealth fighters in Tibet, though no formal decision has been reached.
The acquisition talks for the S-400 systems are anticipated to be a focal point in broader defense discussions between India and Russia. These discussions coincide with an upcoming visit by Russian President Vladimir Putin to India for the BRICS summit scheduled in September.
