Brighton & Hove Albion demonstrated tactical discipline and resilience to secure a 1-1 draw against Manchester City on Wednesday evening. The result extends City’s winless streak to three Premier League matches and leaves them five points adrift of leaders Arsenal.
Manchester City opened the scoring four minutes before halftime through an Erling Haaland penalty. The spot-kick was awarded after VAR upheld the referee’s decision that Diego Gomez had fouled Jeremy Doku inside the penalty area. Haaland converted confidently, scoring his 150th goal for the club, ending a three-game goal drought, and reaching 20 Premier League goals for the season.
The second half began with City seeking to extend their advantage. Bernardo Silva had an excellent opportunity when he intercepted a Brighton error, but his goal-bound effort rebounded off the post. Tensions flared when City goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma and Brighton’s Maxim De Cuyper engaged in a heated confrontation, resulting in yellow cards for both players.
The equalizer came in the 60th minute from Kaoru Mitoma, who showcased his technical ability. The Japanese international received a pass from wide, took a touch to position himself at the edge of the box, and curled a precise low shot into the far corner, beating Donnarumma convincingly.
Brighton grew in confidence after equalizing, taking control of possession and the game’s tempo. They came agonizingly close to taking the lead when Mitoma’s creative play found Gomez inside the penalty area, but the midfielder’s finish was blocked by Donnarumma. Mitoma’s attempt to convert the rebound from a narrow angle struck the post. City’s final chance fell to Haaland in injury time when he broke clear of the Brighton defense, but Verbruggen’s excellent save ensured the visitors claimed a well-deserved point.
